Secret Service agent shoots self in hip

CAMARILLO, Calif., Feb. 5 (UPI) -- A Secret Service agent assigned to protect Nancy Reagan accidentally shot himself during a firearms training session at a California range, police said.
A Ventura County sheriff's deputy said the agent, whose identity was not released, was wounded when his gun accidentally discharged while he was returning it to his holster Friday, KTLA-TV, Los Angeles, reported. The bullet struck him in the hip, causing a wound that was described as not life-threatening.
The division assigned to protect the wife of the late President Ronald Reagan had rented part of the Ventura County Sheriff's Department range in Camarillo for a routine training session. The session was not connected to events this weekend in honor of Reagan's 100th birthday at the presidential library in Simi Valley, the Ventura Star said.

CAMARILLO, Calif. (KABC) -- A secret service agent assigned to former first lady Nancy Reagan is recovering after accidentally shooting himself at a Ventura County Sheriff's Department shooting range.
The agent was reportedly putting a gun in his holster while at a shooting range in Camarillo on Friday when the gun went off and hit his hip.
He is expected to fully recover.
The Ventura County Star reports the agent was assigned to a unit that provides security for Nancy Reagan.

VENTURA, Calif. (AP) — A Secret Service agent assigned to protect Nancy Reagan is recovering after accidentally shooting himself in the hip at a sheriff's department shooting range.
Ventura County sheriff's spokesman Capt. Mike Aranda says the gun went off as the agent was putting it back in its holster Friday at the range in Camarillo. The agent was hospitalized with a non-life-threatening injury to his hip. His name was not released.
Nobody else was injured.
The Ventura County Star reports the agent was assigned to the Reagan Protective Division of the Secret Service, which handles security for the former first lady.
Aranda says the Secret Service is handling the investigation of the incident.

The shooting occurred around 10 a.m. Friday morning at the Ventura County Sheriff's Department shooting range in Camarillo. According to sheriffs, the agent was putting his gun back in its holster when it accidentally fired. He was transported to a local hospital with a non-life threatening injury to his hip.
The agent, whose identity was not revealed, is part of the division that handles security for Nancy Reagan. The division had rented a portion of the shooting range Friday morning for regular training.
The Ventura County Star reported that the team was not training in connection with this weekend's celebration of Ronald Reagan's birth at the Reagan Library in Simi Valley.
A spokesman for the Secret Service agency said an investigation is underway to find out exactly what happened and prevent shootings like this from occuring again.
